Island Real Estate’s Team Gardner captures first win

Never say quit has been the mantra for Team Gardner, sponsored by Island Real Estate, all season long in the eight to 10-year old youth basketball league at the Anna Maria Island Community Center.

At the start of the last regular season game of the season for both teams, Team Gardner found themselves without a win despite tough battles and positive spirits by the Island Real Estate crew.

With a full squad, Team Gardner pulled ahead early with a quick basket by Nicholas Yatros and four points from Jack Procter. Team Calvary’s Fiona Turner-Leathem added the next two points with a strong basket, taking the score to 6-2.

To make an even five-on-five competition, Gregory Jordan played up from the Instructional League. Jordan’s hustle and ball handling skills helped Team Calvary stay in the game.

Tommy Son’s basket with only seconds left in the game helped to bring Island Real Estate within two points at the end of the first half of regulation play. Son quickly picked up the same pace at the start of the second half with another basket to tie the game 6-6.

Procter answered back, pulling Team Gardner ahead once again. The back and forth battle on the court continued for the remainder of the game.

Jaylen Reaves put four points on the board and teammate Son added two more making the score 8-12 with Team Calvary in the lead. But the determination of Island Real Estate allowed the team to come back strong. Procter scored two more points and Anthony Nguyen shot and scored for two under the basket.

The game saw excellent ball handling by Isabella Padilla for Team Calvary. Team Gardner was supported by hustle by Dante Tilelli, strong court presence by Michael Coleman and impressive defensive skills by Evan Talucci. Regulation time play ended with the game tied 12-12.

After a scoreless two minutes of overtime action, the game went into double overtime. Procter quickly made a basket to end the tie. In quick action play, Nguyen stole the ball from Team Calvary and made a fast break to the basket scoring the final two points of the game giving Island Real Estate’s Team Gardner their first victory of the season.

Team Calvary and Team Gardner meet up one last time for the Championship Game on Friday, June 5, at 6 p.m.
