The Sun sports game of the week was an awesome 8-to-10-year-old youth basketball game between the Beach Bums team and the Island Real Estate team in the Anna Maria Island Community Center’s basketball league.
The first half action was fast and furious, but both teams had trouble finding their groove. On occasion, the shots were there, but they just were not falling in for either team. Both defenses controlled the opposition’s half-court offense and finding the open lanes for shots and passing was very difficult.
At the end of the first half of play, Luke Bisio went to the free throw line with the game tied at four apiece. He missed the first free throw, but drained the second to give the Island Real Estate team the lead at half time five to four.
The second half of play was all the Island Real Estate team. They stepped up their defense and their shots started to fall in. Shawn Balvin, of Island Real Estate, went on a tear and the Beach Bums team defense did not have an answer for him. Balvin scored eight second half points to carry his team to its first victory of the year with a final score of 17 to 8.
Shawn Balvin led all scoring in the game with 10 points and Luke Bisio added three points. Both Ben Brashear and Anthony Nguyen pitched in with two points each for the Island Real Estate victory.
Sean Rodriquez led the scoring for the Beach Bums team with four points. Both Will Batey and Michael Pears chipped in with two points each.
