Hard to stay undefeated

Austin Miller lays in two of his 17 points for Heritage
Paper Co. during the 14-to-17-year-old league championship game.

The Sun sports game of the week was a battle for first place in the 14-17-year-old youth basketball league between the Heritage Paper Co. and the Walter & Associates team.

The sports term “on the line” ended up having a double meaning in this game. The season ending regular season championship was on the line, but the conclusion of the game and the championship outcome was on the foul line.

The Heritage Paper Co. team led the entire first half of play, but could not totally pull away in the score. The Walter & Associates team hung on with a halftime score of 26 to 21, Heritage in the lead.

Burke Hill and Austin Miller both scored 10 points in the first half of play for Heritage Paper Co. Sam Cuva added the other six points for them. Walter & Associates used diversified scoring to keep it close in the first half. Phil Rottes scored seven first half points, Neil Carper and Colin Rottes scored five points, and Eric Crawford and Jack Walter each scored two points to round out their 21 first half points.

Walter & Associates came out a different team in the second half with the league championship on the line. Seth Walter came out and hit a big three pointer to start the half and cut the lead to just two points. Moments later, Eric Crawford tapped in a rebound for two points, and the game was tied 28 to 28.

The Heritage team responded and put the full court press on and regained the lead for most of the third quarter. With fatigue setting in on the Heritage team it dropped back into the half-court defense, and with one minute left in the third, Walter & Associates put on their own full court press. They got the result they wanted and off the steal, Cooper Hardy drained a three-pointer and put Walter & Associates in the lead for the first time in the game 33 to 32.

With four minutes left in the game, Burke Hill got a steal off the Heritage full court press and made the layup to cut the scored to 38 to 40. Walter & Associates finally started converting their press breaker offense into layups, and they took the lead 46 to 41 with one minute and 30 seconds left in the game.

With only 40 seconds left in the game, Austin Miller, of the Heritage team, cut the lead to just two with a steal and a layup. Both teams were now in the one-and-one bonus, and the Heritage team was forced to foul and stop the clock.

The game was on the line and the Heritage team fouled and sent Phil Rottes to the foul line. Phil hit the front end of the one and one and put Walter & Associates up 47 to 44. With only eight seconds left, the Heritage team had a chance to tie it with a three-pointer but Phil Rottes got the rebound, and they fouled him again to stop the clock. This time Phil iced the win by hitting both free-throws and sealed the championship win for the Walter & Associate’s team 49 to 44.

Ross Built Construction and Walter & Associates ended up deadlocked in a tie for first place in the league standings. Both teams will be considered regular season co-champions but the #1 seed going into the tournament will be determined by defense. On Tuesday, May 28, the Community Center Athletic Department will add up the total amount of points given up during the season, and the team with the best defense, the fewest points allowed, will receive the first place seed.

Feasting at a vegan bakery in NOLA

Anna Maria Island Sun News Story

There’s nothing quite like photos to say a thousand words. For those who think that eating vegan is boring, take a sniff at these. Recently, I was asked to speak at the New Orleans Veggie Fest. I will go anywhere for airfare and couch surfing. My host family turned out to be the owners of a vegan bakery. A vegan bakery in New Orleans. Who woulda thunk? Still running these calories off. Oh my.
