Inspiring a generation

This week, I placed in my 28th 5 or 10K race for my age group since 2008 – a year after I started running again following a 20-year absence. During that time, I biked, walked, and biked and walked with my kids on my back or the back of my bike.

What was unusual about this most recent race was that I also came in sixth overall female and got my first masters award, meaning I beat out women who were 10 to 20 years younger than me. The results for the “It Works 5K” haven’t been posted officially yet, but they were available at the race.

When I ran with the pack at my Sunday morning run with the Suncoast Striders at the pristine Robinson Preserve today, a friend ribbed, “So if you were sixth overall female, how many females were there? 7?”

“Very funny,” I laughed. “It was a small race, maybe around 100 or 125. I don’t know. But there were a lot of kids running. Mostly kids it seemed.”

My time, just over 30 minutes was nothing to write home about. Granted, it was 90 percent humidity, and the race, which was at the Stoneybrook Golf Club in east Bradenton, was full of those things we generally never see in Florida hills! Not huge hills, but enough to shave several minutes off my time.

The overall female in the race was in the 41-50 age group, and the second overall female was Maggie Guzy Miller was in my age group. She finished about two minutes ahead of me.

Maggie aside, so what’s up with us older ladies beating the younger generations? Are they just not training, not exercising, glued to computers and inside too much? I don’t know the answers, but this race, more than any other, really drove that message home. It is what drives me to get up in the morning and do personal training at the gym, online or by phone.

I don’t have the time I did in the previous years to do volunteer coaching at Manatee High, though I try to show up, schedule permitting just to provide a little inspiration when the kids say “I don’t wanna.” They actually had a meet at the same day and time that the “It Works 5K” was held, so maybe some of the faster kids were there. Yeah, that’s the ticket. The faster kids didn’t show up.

Inspiring a generation to get off the couch may be the most important job that any of us adults may have. I know I treat this more seriously than any job I’ve ever had. I’ve seen breast cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and arthritis up close and personal. They are not easy nor are they cheap. They take up a lot of time, much more time than spending a few hours a week prepping and cooking healthy food. Much more time than heading out for a 30-minute daily run or 1 hour walk.

I may be scarce for a few weeks. I’m heading out this week to be a headliner at Portland’s VegFest, speak at Whole Foods while I’m there, then the following week back to Chicago’s Veganmania, after just speaking there a few weeks ago at Veggie Fest. Seems like Chicago can’t get too much of a good thing.

The following week at San Francisco’s International Vegetarian Union’s 40th VegFest, then back as a speaker, cooking demo, “Ask the Expert” booth appearance at Tampa’s Vegfest, followed two weeks later by Orlando’s Vegfest.

Thank you Bill Clinton for getting such rave reviews on how much your vegan diet gave you great health and energy at the Democratic National Convention. My business has never been better!
