Quarterback Thomas Heckler drops back
to pass for Connelly Marine Buccaneers.

The Sun sports Game of the Week came under the Friday night lights when the Air & Energy Patriots played the Connelly Marine Buccaneers in Instructional League Community Center NFL Flag Football action. These five to seven year old, half pint players, were packed full of excitement. You could hear fans cheering, coaches encouraging and players giggling. Some of the action included five-year-olds running with the ball the wrong way, six-year-olds bobbing and weaving through the defense, and seven-year-olds scoring touchdowns and celebrating in the end zone like it was the best thing ever.

The excitement started on the very first play. Hailey Jonatzke, of the Connelly Marine Buccaneers, took the handoff from quarterback Thomas Heckler and ran for a long touchdown. The Air & Energy Patriots did not score on their first possession but the series was highlighted by a nice first down run by Madelyn Rogers. The Buccaneers got the ball back and ran a tricky reverse to Andrew Austin who ran it to the two yard line. Two plays later David Daigle ran up the middle for the touchdown. The two teams went back and forth not scoring but just before the half Dean Stephenson took a second down handoff and zigzagged in for a 15 yard Patriots touchdown.

In the second half, the A & E Patriots strike first. Patriots quarterback Gavin Johnston threw a touchdown pass to Conley, who ran 20 yards for the score. On the next play from scrimmage. Andrew Austin bobbed and weaved around defenders for a 25-yard Buccaneers running touchdown. The extra point was good when Austin threw a pass to David Daigle, who made a nice grab in the back of the end zone.

With the Super Bowl coming up this weekend, it was inspiring to watch these little tikes. Are these the future stars of the NFL? On this field, this is where dreams are forged, talents are taught and at the end of the game, everyone's a winner.

Jack LaLanne and a Chocolate Surprise

It would be difficult to write a fitness column and not talk about the recent death of America’s fitness icon, Jack LaLanne. If you were one of his fans, you probably have already read a little or perhaps a great deal about his life that often surfaces when a legend leaves our world.

The 96-year-old LaLanne was known for his amazing strength and giving birth to the fitness movement. Much of the equipment he invented still exists in health clubs and fitness gyms all over the world and here on the Island.

The Jack LaLanne Show ran for more than three decades and was the longest running television exercise program. Jumping Jacks were named and done in his honor.

In the early 1960s, as LaLanne arrived on the exercise scene, 13 percent of Americans weighed in as obese. That number has grown to 34 percent today.

Readily available fast and cheap foods, laden with salt, fats and corn syrup, make it too easy to put on the pounds and too difficult to remove them.

With clients who are overwhelmed by the many changes they think they have to make to lose weight, I stress making just a few changes to start. The sodas and alcohol are the first to go. Alcohol has a fair number of those pesky bad carbs…calories that quickly find their way into the bloodstream and wreak havoc with blood sugar levels.

Here are a few of LaLanne’s memorable quotes.

“Your waistline is your lifeline.”

“Don’t exceed the feed limit.”

“The food you eat today is walking and talking tomorrow.”

“Ten seconds on the lips and a lifetime on the hips.” (My personal favorite)

“Better to wear out than rust out.”

“Do – don’t stew.”

LaLanne ate tons of fruits and vegetables. He even designed a juicer. I bought one after I saw an infomercial the night my dad died. More power to you if you have one. But it takes time to prep the ingredients and wash the parts. I’m much happier with my 1000 watt blender for smoothies and soups. Whatever works, right? In honor of Jack, I give you my blender-made healthy Chocolate Surprise Cake:

1 2/3 c. whole wheat pastry flour (or 2/3 cup regular whole wheat flour and 1 cup all-purpose flour)
1 tsp. baking powder
3 tsp. baking soda
3 1/2 c. pitted dates, divided
1 can (8 oz.) pineapple chunks in own natural juices, drained
1 banana
1 c. unsweetened applesauce
1 c. shredded beets
3/4 c. shredded carrots
1/2 c. shredded zucchini
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 c. chopped walnuts
1 c. vanilla soymilk
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 350º. In a small bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. In a blender or food processor, put three cups of the dates, along with the pineapple, banana, and applesauce.

Slice the remaining half cup of dates into half-inch thick pieces. In a large bowl, put the sliced dates, beets, carrots, zucchini, cocoa powder, walnuts, soymilk, vanilla and flour mixture and mix well.

Add the small bowl and blended mixture to the large bowl and mix well. Spread in a 9- by 13-inch nonstick baking pan or two 9-inch round pans. Bake for one hour or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

Optional chocolate icing

1 c. raw macadamia nuts or raw cashews, unsalted
1/3 c. brazil nuts or hazelnuts
1 c. vanilla soymilk
2/3 c. pitted dates
2 Tbs. cocoa powder
1 tsp. vanilla extract

In a blender, put the nuts, soymilk, dates, cocoa powder and vanilla. Process all the ingredients until they are smooth and creamy. Smooth over warm or cooled cake and serve.

PS. Hubby had no idea beets, carrots and zucchinis were in his cake. Wink, wink. Chocolate (alone) is a good anti-oxidant.

Don’t forget to join me every Friday at 9 a.m. at the playground on Manatee Beach where we’ll do a short walk/run for an hour. I’ll include warm-ups and cool downs. Bring a towel for stretching.
