Joan Carter and John Lach wlecome you to J & J Graphics.
Anyone who has lived or worked on Anna Maria Island knows that small businesses come and go almost as quickly as each day’s sunsets. But there is one business on the Island that has seen 25 sunsets with the same owners and is planning on seeing many more.
J & J Graphics, owned by partners Joan Carter and John Lach, has been operating a screen printing and retail shop for 25 years this month and is one of Anna Maria’s oldest businesses. Carter, who runs the day to day operation of the business, has been a Florida resident for almost 30 years, half of them living on the Island. Learning her craft in her native North Carolina, she worked for three years for another screen printing shop before she and Lach decided to team up.
J & J Graphics offers personalized screen printing of T-shirts, coffee mugs, mouse pads, coasters, license plates and more. It specializes in shirts for school teams and provides many of the Island restaurants with customized shirts. In addition, J & J Graphics can customize single item pieces that are ideal for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and all special occasions. Carter says just bring in your favorite picture or logo and they’ll turn it into a personalized gift.
Last July J & J moved to its new location in the city of Anna Maria giving it the additional space to expand its retail shop and production. It stocks a large supply of Anna Maria Island apparel, including T-shirts, shorts, caps, canvas totes, towels and sunglasses for adults, children and infants in this bright and open space. In fact, the paint on the walls was chosen from the Hanes color pallet to match the shirts available for purchase. It makes you feel like you’ve walked into a soft cotton T-shirt.
The production side of J & J Graphics is almost as inviting as the shop. Rather than hiding the screening equipment, Carter and Lach installed a large window where customers can view the screening operation. Even the equipment used to create personalized coffee mugs is right out on the front counter. Carter points out that J & J Graphics’ manual screen printing operation produces a better quality shirt than products that are mass produced.
Although Carter handles most of the production at J & J Graphics, she gets a helping hand from Olga Martinez. Martinez is an independent graphic artist who occupies space in the shop and designs most of the unique graphics.
Carter and Lach want to thank all of their loyal customers through the years that have helped make their business the success it is today. They will be having some anniversary sales to celebrate their 25 years, so watch for those dates.
During the short time I was at J & J Graphics, three different sets of people wandered in looking for either directions or help with a particular item. They were greeted warmly, offered a seat, water and maps. Carter says it’s all just part of the service.
Before the next sunset, wander into J & J Graphics and see for yourself how gracious and colorful they are – 25 years and counting.
