Competition heats up after third week of hoops

As the Community Center basketball season progressed through the third week of the 2010 season, the division races are close enough for any team to make its mark at this early point in the season. Everyone’s quest for an undefeated season has now vanished, as the lone undefeated team of Walter & Associates picked up its first loss on Friday to Ross Built in Division 2 action. The Sandbar team in Division 3 earned a pair of wins this week to improve itsrecord to 3-3, along with The Gathering Place in the Premier Division picking up two wins to remain in first place. The current division leaders are Connie’s Landscaping, Walter & Associates and The Gathering Place, however, there are still many games left to be played by all and anything can happen.

Monday, May 17
Division 3 (8-9-year-olds)
Sandbar 11
Connie’s Landscaping 4

Sandbar picked up its first of two wins this week, defeating first-place Connie’s Landscaping 11-4. It was an all around team effort for the victorious team as Josh Class lead his team with four points in addition to baskets made by Joe Rogers, Connor Gsell and Brooke Capparelli and a made free throw. Dylan Joseph scored all four points for Connie’s, but the rest of the team could not get going on offense.

Division 2 (10-11-year-olds)
Walter & Associates 21
Ross Built 10

Moriah Goode stole the show in this game and made all the difference in the win for his Walter & Associates team. Goode had a dominating 16-point performance and received help with a combined five points from Jack and Seth Walter to round out the teams scoring. Ross Built scored eight of its 10 points in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late as the team fell to 2-2.

Premier Division (14-17-year-olds)
The Gathering Place 39
Rotten Ralph's 36

Kyle Aritt led The Gathering Place to its fourth win by scoring 19 points - 13 in the second half - to help seal the deal. Chandler Hardy and Wyatt Hoffman hauled in seven and six points respectively. to help support Aritt’s strong performance.
Rotten Ralphs suffered its third loss, despite receiving 14 points from Brandon Gengler and 13 points by Forrest Schield.

Tuesday, May 18
Instructional Division (5-7-yearolds)
West Coast Air Conditioning 12
Island Real Estate 5

Conal Cassidy did it all for his West Coast Air Conditioning team by scoring 12 points in the win. Hailey Jonatzke had three points and Thomas Heckler added another pair for Island Real Estate.

Division 1 (12-13-year-olds)
A Paradise Realty 37
Coastal Orthopedics 24

A Paradise Realty poured on the offense in this matchup, receiving 12 points from Nehimiah Goode and 10 points by Blaine Jenefsky in the victory. Josh Zawistoski and Mikayla Kane contributed with seven and six points, respectively, as well for the victors. Coastal Orthopedics was led by an 11-point performance from Burke McCampbell-Hill and another nine points scored by Jake Parsons.

Premier Division (14-17-year-olds)
Rotten Ralph's 45
Tortilla Bay 37

Rotten Ralph's got its revenge of a tough loss the night before by defeating Tortilla Bay 45-37. Forrest Schield led all scorers with 13 points for Rotten Ralph's and Brandon Gengler added 11. Tortilla Bay picked up its fourth loss, despite seeing nine points from Tommy Price, eight points from Travis Belsito and seven points by Max Miller.

Wednesday, May 19
Division 3 (8-9-year-olds)
Sandbar 14
Beach Bistro 6

The Sandbar team earned its second win of the week and improved to 3-3 with four point games by Tilelli, Rogers and Class. Capparelli added one basket of her own as the team currently sits behind Connie’s Landscaping in second place. Joey Stewart, of the Beach Bistro team, sank two baskets for four points and Griffin Heckler scored two points.

Division 2 (10-11-year-olds)
Bob Vita Lawn Service 18
Anna Maria Oyster Bar 11

Adam Clark led all scorers with six points to help Bob Vita Lawn Service earn its first victory of the week. The trio of Mikey Ellsworth, Gavin Sentman and Sarah Quattromani each scored four points to help their team secure the win. The Anna Maria Oyster Bar team received five points from Tyler Yavalar, four points by Reese Helvey and two points from Emma Moneuse.

Premier Division (14-17 year olds)
The Gathering Place 43
Tortilla Bay 22

The Gathering Place improved its record and first place lead to 5-1 after handing Tortilla Bay its second loss of the week. Aritt had an impressive game by scoring 22 points, just as many as the entire Tortilla Bay team combined. Jerry Mayer and Hardy each added six points in the win. Tortilla Bay’s points leaders were Miller with eight, Price with five and Belsito with three in the tough loss.

Thursday, May 20
Instructional Division (5-7-year-olds)
Jessie’s Island Store 14
Island Real Estate 1

Jessie’s Island Store earned a win this week by playing extremely well on both sides of the ball. David Daigle, Andrew Austin and Javiar Rivera each scored four points in the game along with one basket added by German Rivera. The lone point for Island Real Estate came on a free-throw shot made by Jonatzke.

Division 3 (8-9-year-olds)
Connie’s Landscaping 19
Beach Bistro 13

Connie’s Landscaping redeemed itself after a loss on Monday by defeating Beach Bistro 19-13. Leo Rose had a solid performance and led all scorers with nine points for Connie’s, they also received help with six points from Dylan Joseph and four points by Truman Carlsen. Beach Bistro suffered its second loss of the week, despite a strong nine point effort from Joey Stewart and pair of points from Andrew Proctor and Daniel Sentman.

Friday, May 21
Division 2 (10-11-year-olds)
Beach to Bay Construction 18
Walter & Associates 15

Beach to Bay Construction earned a win in its only game of the week and knocked off the previously undefeated Walter & Associates team. Cameron Brauner led all players by scoring nine points in the game and also received help with a five point game from Michael Latimer. Dayton Modderman scored a pair of points and both George Lardas and Matt Menger-DeNigris added one point in the winning effort. Walter & Associates saw six point games from both Seth Walter and Moriah Goode, but it was not enough to edge out its opponent. Jordan Cooley added two points and Zachariah Goode scored a point as the team fell to 4-1 but still remains in first place.

Division 2 (10-11-year-olds)
Ross Built 19
Bob Vita Lawn Service 16

Jake Ross scored 13 of his team’s 19 points to help Ross Built improve to 3-2 on the year. Jack Coleman added three points and both Cooper Hardy and Andrew Ross scored a basket to round out Ross Built’s scoring summary. After winning its first game of the week, Bob Vita Lawn Service fell to 4-2 despite an eight-point game from Adam Clark. Ethan Bertrand, Mikey Ellsworth, Gavin Sentman and Sarah Quattromani each added two points for their team but it was not enough in the close defeat.
