Wet weather provides interesting week of games

Even though the Island experienced the most rain it had seen all year this past week, flag football games were still played in the soggy conditions. The rain made it difficult to pass and catch the ball, but players adjusted well and still managed to score points.

Only one game was cancelled due to heavy rain and lighting on Wednesday night, as this was a shortened week of games before the playoffs start this week.

The playoffs will begin on Wednesday, May 27 and run through Saturday, May 30. Playoff games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be played at the Holmes Beach field, but the Super Bowl and All-Star Games will be played at the Island Community Center on Saturday, May 30.

Also on Saturday the Community Center will be hosting an End of the Year Extravaganza to celebrate the end of the school year and flag football season. There will be food, entertainment and football games from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. with the flag football awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m..

The Texans managed to hold for a close win and keep their undefeated season intact by stopping the Chargers drive with time winding down in the game. Jake Ross led the Chargers with two touchdown catches and Alex Virgilio added a touchdown and extra-point attempt as well to round out the team’s scoring. Chris Galati, of the Texans, reached pay dirt three times in the game, leading all players in scoring for the game. Zach McGuire also ran for a touchdown and was followed up with an extra-point by Matthew Seth.

The Vikings scored with very little time left in the game but were unable to convert the two-point conversion attempt to tie the game as the Colts held on to win. Michael Duffman, Nick Mello and Zach Stewart all had touchdowns for the Colts, with Mikey Ellsworth converting a two-point attempt as well. The Vikings points all came via Ricky Almodovar, who had three touchdowns in the game and proved to be a difficult player to defend due to his size and speed.

Even in a constant flow of rain, the Packers were able to successfully move the ball and reach the end zone four times, twice by Jack Shinn and one by Keegan Murphy and Seth Walter. Jack Shinn really took over this game, with his two rushing touchdowns and passing touchdowns to Murphy and Walter. Walter also added a pair of two-point conversions to round out the Packers’ points. The Vikings lone score came from a touchdown catch by Ricky Almodovar thrown by Josh Zawistoski. These two teams will meet up in the first round of the playoffs Wednesday, May 27.

Island Dojo Martial Arts Academy Jaguars 6
Sparks Steel Art Falcons 0

Heavy rain seemed to really effect the play by both teams, as players were forced to run the ball more because of the wind and difficulty to catch passes. Tyler Yavalar provided the only touchdown on the day for the Jaguars, but it was all the team needed to pull off a victory. Both teams managed to play very solid on defense despite the weather.

Ross Built Chargers 19

Ricky Almodovar had three touchdowns on the night to help lead his Vikings team to a much needed victory on the last game of the regular season. Ben Connors also added a visit to the end zone to put the game just out of reach for the Chargers. Alex Virgilio had a pair of touchdown catches and a successful extra-point conversion, with Andrew Ross notching a touchdown as well to round out the Chargers scoring. This was another tough loss for the Chargers, who were defeated by less than a touchdown in many of their games this season.
