Flag Football teams improving in week 2

The second week of flag football proved to be even more exciting and action packed than the first, as teams showed off some trick plays and played higher quality football on both sides of the ball. The signs of first-game jitters are starting to disappear and teams have learned from their early mistakes; including what types of offensive plays are most effective and how to read a defense’s positioning. Teams will take this week off for spring break, but games will continue on Monday, April 13. For game schedules, results and standings go to www.islandcommunitycenter.com.

The Jaguars put together a solid offensive effort from Nicole Sewall and Jean-Paul Russo, who accounted for all 19 of the team’s points. Sewall had a long touchdown run in the first half and then took another into the end zone later in the game. Russo also had a rushing touchdown and hauled in a pass for an extra point to round out the scoring. Leo Rose was the lone player to reach the end zone for the Patriots, with Aiden Grumley coming through with a two-point conversion attempt as well.

It was a spectacular game for both Michael Latimer and Tyler Pearson on Monday, as each had a pair of touchdowns to lead the Cardinals to victory. The speed of both players created trouble for the defense and made it difficult to decide who to give extra attention to cover. As a result, the Cardinals took advantage of opportunities and cruised home to get the win. Dylan Joseph provided the Falcons with their six points and also played excellent defense, pulling numerous flags during crucial situations in the game.

On back-to-back days the Jaguars were able to hold on for the victory, keeping their record perfect this season. Tyler Yavalar led the team by recording two touchdowns, with Jean-Paul Russo and Tori Walter also reaching the end zone. Walter’s touchdown run was her first of the season, as she managed to run nearly the length of the field and elude several players attempting to pull her flag. Russo’s touchdown was his second in two games. The Falcons offense was led by Joey Stewart, Marlin Ellis and Dylan Joseph, who all played very well, but were unable to put any points on the board.

Chris Galati may be the fastest and most agile athlete in this age division, which was shown in this game by his three touchdowns to lead his Texans’ team to victory. Galati scored not once or twice, but three times and proved to be too much to handle for the Vikings defense. Zach McGuire also had an amazing touchdown catch in the game. McGuire ran a deep route, and despite being covered close by a Vikings defense ,managed to out-jump the defender and come down with a clean catch followed by a short run into the end zone for six points. The Texans’ defense also played very tough and recorded a safety to round out the scoring. The Vikings received touchdowns from Richard Almodovar and Jake Parsons, both on passes from quarterback Josh Zawistoski. Almodovar and Zawistoski also recorded extra points in the 26-14 defeat.

Chris Galati and Zach McGuire both had a pair of scores, leading the Texans efforts. Katie Christenson, Joey Salinas and Matthew Seth each also contributed with touchdowns of their own. Matthew Seth led the Packers with two touchdowns on the night and also played a great game as quarterback. Jacob Talucci and Jack Shinn each had touchdowns also – Talucci with a nice run into the end zone and Shinn caught a pass from Seth to account for the Packers’ 24 points. The game started positive for the Colts, recording a safety for an early 2-0 lead. However, they were unable to hold the Packers offense much after that point. The Colts lone scorer was Austin Marrow, who had a touchdown the night before too.

Luke Shackelford’s speed could not be contained in this game, as he scored three touchdowns showing impressive football skill and athleticism. Aaron King was also a factor in the game, catching a touchdown pass of his own and also recording a two-point conversion. The dynamic duo of Shackelford and King proved to be too much to handle for the Cardinals defense, both of whom also came through big on defense as well. The Cardinals two scores came from Chandler Hardy and Max Miller. Hardy had a long touchdown run down the left side of the field and Miller caught a pass from Hardy later in the game and managed to reach the end zone. Miller also had a big game on defense, intercepting a pass and returning it all the way for another six points to round out the Cardinals’ scoring.

Majors come up short in late-inning loss

Things were going great for the West Coast Surf Shop Majors team on Monday night until the fourth inning, when the USA Fence team broke the 4-4 tie. The Islanders played a solid game and fought hard for their four runs up until that point, however, it slipped away and they couldn’t manage enough runs in the final innings to mount a comeback. Down 4-0 going into the third inning, the team scored four runs in the inning to tie up the game.

Neil Carper led off the inning with a double into the left field gap, followed with a single by Henrik Brusso which advanced Carper to third. Phil DuDevoire came up next and smashed a single, which scored Carper and sent Brusso to second. Clean-up hitter Johnny Mattay stepped up to the plate next and drove a ball that bounced and hit the fence for a double to score Brusso and DuDevoire. Dylan Clemann later drove in Mattay for the fourth run in the inning. Later in the game, Clemman singled to score DuDevoire again for the Islanders’ fifth and final run in the game. Devin Cole and Andrew Zink also recorded singles in the game to contribute at bat. It was a very well-played game on both offense and defense, but USA Fence batters kept hitting the ball in all the right spots and managed to post a 10-5 victory.

It was a different story for the Friday rematch between these two teams, as USA Fence’s offense was too powerful and pounded out 12 runs. Despite only scoring two runs for a 12-2 final score, the offense was always putting the ball in play and only struck out twice. USA Fence’s defense made it very difficult to get many base runners and build momentum.

Henrik Brusso started the game on the mound and was followed by Dylan Clemman, who both surrendered four earned runs in two innings pitched. Parker Keegan finished up the pitching and did not allow any earned runs. Clemann got an RBI in the first inning with a single that scored Carper, who walked to lead off the inning. The highlight of the game on offense was a triple on a ball that Bryce Smith drove down the right field line in the second inning. Smith started to round third base when he saw that the relay throw to third was going to fly past the fielder, but was eventually thrown out at home trying to stretch out the hit. Teams will take this week off for spring break, but games will resume on Monday, April 13 for all age divisions.
