Horseshoe tossers fling through spring
From the April 21, 2010 IssueSpring is here and as the temperatures climb, play continues at the horseshoe pits at Anna Maria City Hall. With the shade from the native trees, it’s actually very enjoyable.
Five teams qualified with the required three wins on Wednesday, April 14.
In the first round, Jerry Bennett and Norm Good drew the bye. Marvin Gengas and Ron Pepka won over Gene Bobeldyke and Steve Grossman, 23 to 16, and Jerry Disbrow and Dave Lansau defeated John Crawford and Tim Sosran, 23 to 16. In the second round, Pepka and Gengas drew the bye and Disbrow and Lansau won over Jerry Bennett and Norm Good, 23 to 16. In the final, Pepka and Gengas soundly defeated Disbrow and Lansau, 22 to 8.
Play gets under way each Wednesday and Saturday. All are welcome, come a little early to practice.
Saturday, April 17, saw only one winner with the required three wins and no losses, and that was Norm Good and John Johnson. Five teams qualified for playoff for second place. In the first round Art Kingstad and Dave Lansaw drew the bye while Tom Skoloda and Karl Thomas soundly defeated Debbie Rhodes and Ron Bussey, 21 to 7, and Marvelous Marvin Gangemi and Jerry Disbrow beat Steve Grossman and Sam Samuels 21 to 12. In the second round, Thomas and Skoloda drew the bye and Marvelous Marve and Disbrow whipped Kingstad and Lansaw 21 to 3. The final round for second was the longest game on record with Marvelous Marvin and Disbrow finally defeating Thomas and Skoloda 23 to 14. That was the round that nobody wanted to win.
