Team Beach House Real Estate's Jon Moss meets his fate
against Mason Martin defender Chad Woods on Thursday night.

In a battle on the gridiron with just five players on the field at a time, starting two men down is not the greatest way to start what would have been perhaps the most anticipated match up of the season. Missing their quarterback, Charles Buky, and three other players, Team Mason Martin snapped the ball on offense with just three players on the field against undefeated Team Beach House Real Estate.

Ever hopeful knowing two players were making their way onto the Island community center, team captain Frank Agnelli assumed the role as QB for the first set of downs. After a 10-yard gain by Chad Woods, Agnelli threw an interception to Beach House Real Estate captain and quarterback Don Purvis.

Purvis made quick work of the field with a first down play to Jon Moss right off the bat. Moss gained an additional 10 yards, setting up teammate Jesse Griffin for the touchdown catch in the end zone. Moving ahead early after the extra point, the Beach House Real Estate team stopped Mason Martin after three snaps of the football.

With his Matrix like moves on the field, avoiding flag pulls from Mason Martin defenders, Shawn Kaleta scored the second touchdown for Beach House Real Estate, putting the score to 13-0.
Trying to put something together, Agnelli’s team gain 20 yards with the catch by Robert Kaston before giving the ball back to Purvis’ squad.

Moving the ball down the field after a Kaleta first down, Purvis took the ball on a handoff behind the line of scrimmage, giving him all day to find Moss at the end of the field for the third touchdown of the game. Jay Hoffmeister had the hot hands for the point after advancing Beach House’s lead to 20 points.

Team Mason Martin’s numbers increased with seven minutes left in the first half with the arrival of backup quarterback Jim Ptak and rushing powerhouse Heidi Johnston. Having a full squad on the field, the team still missed the chemistry necessary to make anything happen.

Both teams losing the offensive possessions, the first half of play came to a close with no points for Mason Martin.

Beach House Real Estate started with the ball with 20 long minutes left in the game. Longtime teammate of Purvis, Jason Mickan took the football into the end zone. Purvis’ extra point moved the score to 27-0.

Ptak hit Agnelli for a huge first down gain to spark energy into the Mason Martin team. On third down, Agnelli got the call with a handoff behind the line. Being chased down, “Frank the Tank” Agnelli rushed his way toward the end zone ready to plow over anyone in his way. At the five-yard line, Team Beach House Real Estate’s Griffin made the big stop with the flag pull, preventing the touchdown.

Making it look easy, Moss took the ball to the 30-yard line, followed by the first down catch by Mickan. Repeating the success, Moss took the football for good yardage, giving Mickan the scoring opportunity. Mickan’s run after the catch, with Agnelli trying to bring him down by holding his uniform, put six more points on the scoreboard. Hoffmeister topped it off with the extra point.

Behind in the game by 34 points, Team Mason Martin was determined not to end scoreless. Ptak forced the ball up over the head of intended receiver Woods into the hands of Beach House Real Estate’s Mickan.

With the wind out of their sails and the ball on the Mason Martin 14-yard line, Purvis went back to work on offense. Using the handoff behind the line work for them, Moss took the ball and waited patiently until he found his target, Griffin, free and clear in the end zone for another Beach House Real Estate score.

Down by 40, Ptak regained his offensive composure hitting Woods in the pass only zone near midfield. Kaston made the first down reception on the second play of the possession. Calling for the ball, Woods got open near the end zone making the reception on the six-yard line.

In reach of six points, Ptak threw the football to Agnelli giving him the option to run or pass.

Zeroing in on Ptak, Agnelli fired the ball to Ptak, allowing him to score the team’s first touchdown in the game. Johnston’s point after finally put the seven points on the scoreboard for Mason Martin, preventing the shutout.

The last series of the game started with both teams having all of their timeouts and 90 seconds left on the game clock. Trying to get the ball back, Mason Martin wisely utilized both of its timeouts as Beach House continued to move down the field. In the last second, Purvis connected with Mickan for another score, sealing the deal wit the score 46-7.

Beach House Real Estate faces winless Progressive Cabinetry in this week’s match ups. Mason Martin, now in the middle of the pack, plays Beach to Bay in what should be a close game.
