Moss Builders' Emily Moss and Chad Woods give Pat Calvary,
of Progressive Cabinetry, no where to go Thursday night.

The rain could not stop the adult footballers at The Center Thursday night. However, the lightning most certainly did, but not until half time of the second game of the night. Fans, family and friends were able to witness the first game of the night, the Mosses versus the Shaughnessys, two of the Island families in the league.

It was a matchup of speed and quick execution in the battle between Moss Builders and Progressive Cabinetry. The passing stats of both skilled quarterbacks and team captains Ryan Moss and Tim Shaughnessy were toe-to-toe with 175 and 180 passing yards, respectively.

The game ultimately came down to flag pulls and the head-to-head match up between Moss Builders' Chad Woods and Pat Calvary for Progressive Cabinetry.

With Moss Builders missing two critical players, Mike Gillum and Andrew Terman, the team relied heavily upon the skills of the patriarch of the Moss family, Ed Moss; the defensive prowess of Emily Moss and Rainia Lardas; and the speed of Jordan Ganey.

The first half of the game was a scoring festival for both teams. Setting the tone for the game, Jason Garden intercepted the second down pass of R. Moss. Progressive Cabinetry quickly capitalized with a touchdown to P. Calvary with a perfect extra point conversion to immediately put seven points on the scoreboard.

After the snap to R. Moss, a quick pass to E. Moss behind the line of scrimmage gave Moss Builders play options on their second offensive possession of the game. E. Moss quickly got the football back to his son. Being patient and not finding an open receiver, R. Moss ran the ball the length of the field past P. Calvary, who could not make the flag pull, scoring the touchdown. Moss Builders made the extra point tying the ballgame 7-7.

Playing without their solid player Caleb Roberts, Progressive Cabinetry returned to their offensive playbook hitting D. Calvary for the quick pass and first down yardage gain on the run after. Husband, P. Calvary, gained his own rushing yardage on the second down play moving the ball within striking distance from the goal line.

After accidentally getting struck in the head by the elbow of T. Shaughnessy, R. Moss came off the field to get his head wrapped up allowing him to continue in the game. Continuing play, Ganey put the pressure on the Progressive QB. Cool headed, T. Shaughnessy found the hands of Garden who easily walked the ball into the end zone for the third touchdown of the game advancing the score to 14-7 with the point after.

With three minutes left on the clock, Moss Builders marched the football down the field, with a first down throw to E. Moss, followed by the touchdown catch and run by Woods who finished the game with 115 total yards. The missed extra point catch left Progressive Cabinetry ahead in the game by one point.

The next two possessions by each of the teams in the first half came up short, leaving the score 14-13 with 20 minutes left to play in the game.

As the rains continued to challenge the players, P. Calvary showed his team and opponents why he is considered one of the strongest players in the league. Taking the quick pitch, the Progressive Cabinetry powerhouse sped down the entire length of the field being chased by Moss Builders' Woods, but his speed just could not be matched on the touchdown play.
Moss Builders' offense returned to the field hoping to close the gap on the eight-point deficit. After three snaps of the ball, the team found themselves back on defense.

Offensive possession went back and forth as the weather made it more difficult for both teams to cleanly execute their plays. Mike Shaughnessy took snaps giving the ball to his son T. Shaughnessy hoping to give him the option to run. Daughter Brianna Shaughnessy provided defensive pressure helping her to team to maintain their lead in the game.

For the last score of the game, M. Shaughnessy made the quick pitch to P. Calvary, who ended the night with 155 receiving yards. The speed of P. Calvary was just too much for R. Moss and Ganey who had no chance of stopping the touchdown. Sealing the deal with the extra point, Garden moved the score to 28-13 with less than three minutes on the clock.

Despite the valiant effort of Moss Builders, the win was just not in their reach. Another top team fell to Progressive Cabinetry who looks like the team to beat this season at the Island's community center.
