Thursday night at The Center, Sean Flynn, for Anna Maria
CrossFit, reaches to deflect the pass to the hot hands of
Coldwell Banker's Matt Morgan.

After experiencing a loss in their first game of the season against Team Mason Martin, Team Coldwell Banker, led by quarterback Charles Buky marched down the football field against Team Anna Maria CrossFit for its first victory Thursday night at the Island's community center. The one-two combination of Buky to Matt Morgan, who had a total of 130 receiving yards and three touchdowns, proved to be the right formula for Coldwell Banker.

Week two's first game of the night saw Anna Maria CrossFit with the ball. With Kate Serdy at center, quarterback Clay Spangler hit Alan Conley for a five-yard gain. Coldwell Banker's Mike Brusso got the go ahead to put the pressure on Spangler, forcing the quick pass to Conley out of bounds.

On third down, Morgan struck quick with the interception after Spangler's long pass down field. Buky took his first snap from center Robert Kaston, throwing the football 10 yards to James Ptak.

With the rush by team captain Danny Murphy for Anna Maria CrossFit, Buky found Kaston for the first down past mid-field. Against the strong defense of big man Sean Flynn, Buky hit Morgan in the corner of the end zone for the first score of the night.

Buky's toss for the extra point was out of the reach of Taryn Morgan, keeping the score at 6-0 for Team Coldwell Banker.

Back on offense, hoping to tie up the ball game, Spangler resumed his position behind center with a short pass to Murphy with the quick flag pull by Ptak for Coldwell Banker. On the second down play, Murphy took the ball for the first down before being forced out of bounds.

After Spangler found Sean McCarthy open for short yardage, the Team Anna Maria CrossFit quarter back hit Murphy in the hands for the tying touchdown with 10 minutes left in the first half of play.

Missing the extra point attempt, with the score 6-6, Coldwell Banker took over on offense. Buky's first pass was tipped by Murphy. Feeling the pressure of the Anna Maria CrossFit's rusher, the second down pass was a quick out to Kaston, setting up the team for its third down play.

The M. Morgan-Buky combo found success again with a reaching long catch by M. Morgan on his fingertips for a first down catch 10 yards from the goal line.

Recovering from a low snap, Buky tossed the ball to Brusso right outside of the end zone. Brusso finished the play with his smooth moves scoring six points for his team. Last week's hot player for Team Coldwell Banker, T. Morgan scored the extra point advancing the score to 13-6.

On fire and ready to close out the first half of the game, Buky showed his defensive game face by batting down the pass of Spangler. With the handoff to Murphy behind the line of scrimmage, the team captain had the option of running or passing. Murphy held on to the ball, rushing it for a first down after gaining 30 yards.

With two minutes left on the clock, Serdy made the reception after bobbling the pass. Eluding the defense with her evasive moves, Serdy scored the fourth touchdown of the game to bring Team Anna Maria CrossFit within one point of the tie. Determined to maintain the lead, Buky once again batted down Spangler's extra point pass leaving the score at 13-12.

Coldwell Banker started the second half of play on offense making a five-yard gain with a pass to T. Morgan. After two incomplete passes Team Anna Maria CrossFit took possession of the football.

Murphy made a sliding catch to start his team's offensive go. After an incomplete pass into traffic, Murphy took the ball behind the line of scrimmage on third down with T. Murphy hot on his heels. A pass interference call on Ptak gave Anna Maria CrossFit a new set of downs near the end zone.

QB and team captain Buky continued to show his defensive skills, sacking Spangler for a loss of yardage. Not to be denied, Spangler threw the touchdown pass into traffic to hit Flynn for the go ahead touchdown, moving the points to 13-18. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

With pressure to put points on the scoreboard, T. Morgan gained short yardage for Coldwell Banker. Quick to score, M. Morgan was the target between defenders Flynn and Murphy. Both defenders missed the ball and the receiver, leaving the field wide open for Morgan. The strong rushing pressure of Serdy forced Buky to throw the ball on the extra point attempt, leading to an incomplete pass.

The one point lead for Team Coldwell Banker made the last six minutes of the game critical for both teams. Reading the play, M. Morgan intercepted the pass of Spangler running between two open receivers on cross fits offensive push to grab the football.

T. Morgan started Coldwell Banker's offensive push downfield with a short reception met by the immediate flag pull of Serdy. Buky, seeing the field, found Kaston all alone in the end zone for the go ahead touchdown.

After the extra point, Team Anna Maria CrossFit fought hard with the score 26-18. Flynn made a nice catch despite heavy defensive coverage by Ptak. With the clock ticking and less than two minutes left in the game, Ptak stopped the offensive play by Conley with the flag pull. On third down, Buky chased quarterback Spangler, forcing him to cross the line of scrimmage before releasing the ball. Spangler unsuccessfully argued the call, leading to the end of the game.

Coldwell Banker's victory made them one of six teams with a 1-1 record for the season two games into the season. Team Mason Martin leads the pack early in the season after its second win. Team Blake Medical Center goes into the third week of play looking for a W.
