Anna Maria Island Sun News Story

Despite the cold weather, more than 100 runners
turned out for the Anna Maria Elementary School's
Dolphin Dash. Kids and adults take off for the 5-K race.

HOLMES BEACH – The competition in this year’s Dolphin Dash was hot, even if the weather wasn’t.

Runners in this annual fund-raiser didn’t have to worry about overheating as temperatures were in the 40s for the 5-K race at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Approximately 160 people signed up for the race, and same day entries put hopes on exceeding 200 runners for this event.

Thomas Heckler sang the National Anthem before the 5-K race, and he drew loud cheers and applause from the crowd with his skillful rendering.

The male winner of the 5-K, Michael Lamb, of Bradenton and a BeachHouse employee, broke the race record with 16.20 minutes. Lamb said he has been running for eight years. He’s a student at the University of South Florida.

Kristin Coyner, who just move to Bradenton from West Virginia, was the women’s champion and Trenton Johnson, a student at Bradenton Christian High School, was the first youth to cross the line.

Some of the racers stayed bundled up before the race while some coped with the chilly weather by exercising. Finally, the clouds parted and the sun warmed the air.

The One-Mile Fun Run is for the younger runners, and each runner gets a medal. Even though nobody was keeping track, it should be noted that Courtney Brown came in first in that race. A student at Manatee High School, Brown had never raced in the Dolphin Dash, but she said she would do it again next year.

Official results will be posted online at www.runnergirl.com.
