BRADENTON BEACH –Police Chief Sam Speciale and Vice Mayor Jack Clarke took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Friday afternoon, responding to a challenge issued by Holmes Beach Police Chief Bill Tokajer.

Jake Spooner, owner of the Fish Hole adventure golf facility, donated $200 to the ALS Association in exchange for the honor of dumping ice water on the police chief.

On behalf of Drift In owner Joe Cuervo and his $100 pledge, Mark Messina soaked the vice mayor.

On behalf of the $100 donation made by MaryAnn’s Castaways Tavern patrons and owner MaryAnn Speciale, the couple’s daughter, Casey Speciale, dumped a second bucket of ice water on her dad, taking great relish in doing so.

“Wow is that cold,” Speciale said, after his dress uniform got drenched for a second time.

“We did this for a great cause. It brings the community together and draws attention to some of the charities out there. I appreciate the businesses helping me out and I want to thank them for supporting this. I also want to thank my wonderful and supportive family, and I’m thrilled to have the vice mayor stand with me on this. Apparently, there are people out there that want to see ice water dumped on our heads,” Speciale said.

“It’s a great cause, and I looked forward to dumping ice water on the chief. You can’t beat that,” Spooner said.

“I did this to support the ALS cause, and it’s my privilege and pleasure to be the senior elected official to be doused,” Clarke said.

The early afternoon spectacle drew the attention of Mayor Bill Shearon, Commissioner Janie Robertson, members of the Public Works Department, and other city employees who gathered in the city hall parking lot to vicariously enjoy the chilly plight endured by the chief and vice mayor.

As of Sept. 12, the Ice Bucket Challenge had raised $112 million and the ALS Association had received contributions from more than 3,000,000 donors.
