one of his ten catches during AMICC adult co-ed
summer flag football.

The Agnelli Pools & Spa Dolphins remain the only unbeaten team in the Anna Maria Island Community Center’s adult co-ed flag football league. A grueling back to back game schedule this past week for the entire league saw the 3-0 Dolphins facing off against the 3-0 Duffy’s Tavern Raiders. The Dolphins pulled off the win by a score of 33 to 25.

Quarterback Tim Shaughnessy threw for 90 yards and two touchdowns but also had 86 rushing yards and two hard to come by rushing TDs. Pat Calvary had 94 yards receiving and two TDs and two extra points. Brianna Shaughnessy also had a receiving TD in the Dolphin’s victory.

Quarterback Chris Gillum threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns. All three of those TDs were to his brother Mike Gillum, who had 114 yards receiving and three TDs and an extra point for the Raiders.

On the very next night, the Dolphins barely squeaked by the winless Beach to Bay Construction team 46 to 45. This high scoring game was an exciting shootout, but in the end, the Dolphin’s pulled out their second win of the week and became the only undefeated team in the eight-team league.

Tips for getting toned

A Facebook fan private-messaged me wondering how to get rid of flab, even though she runs more than 25 miles a week. She lifts 10-pound free-weights and does crunches three times per week.

My answer:

I'm not a doc or RD, but as I say often, especially without being able to talk to or see you directly on Skype, "It depends." It could be several things, or a combination.

If you are near menopause, it could be hormonal. Like everything as we age, things can sag. I have the same issue in my quads. I find it incredibly annoying, given how much I work out.

When I race I always check out the other ladies in my age group. I often say things to myself like, "How does that woman, my age, have that much flab and is faster than me?" Typical runner mentality right?

I have yo-yoed with so many weight loss programs losing the same 25 pounds over five decades, that the skin has lost elasticity. But when I compare my skin to others in my five-year race age group, I realize I have more definition than most. Women who have had children tend to be more flabby, again, hormonal.

The largest animals on the planet are muscular and vegan. You may want to try to do more weight training or dynamic warm-up exercises like skipping. You can train with a running club to improve speed or increase mileage, or I can provide a customized program.

When I've increased my mileage, as I'm doing right now training for a half marathon, I feel my glutes and quads getting more defined. If I only run three miles every other day, the definition isn't as noticeable.

Other than a slightly smaller butt, there is no other clue other than the scale starting to move downward. When I trained for a marathon two years ago, I was in the best shape of my life. People I run with comment on the seasonal rise and fall of my (relative to everyone else’s), six-pack abs.

You can try adding more plant protein – chia and/or hemp seed, or plant-protein powders – and see if that makes a difference. But I go back to my question I often ask, "What did mother nature intend? What did our ancestors do?"

I also devote a day or more to core to stave off back issues. I would also suggest adding periods of sprinting during your runs. The Kenyan marathoners have a 70 to 80 percent complex carb diet, but their lifestyle is also different than ours. If you're not training for a marathon, that percentage probably needs to be lower.

High protein diets, as we know, are not good for bones, kidneys and general health. When I work with clients, I ask them to keep a food/exercise log initially so that we can really see what affects weight gain/loss.

I also know that as I continue to race, people in my age group and older succumb to arthritis and injuries. Goals change as we age. When someone asks me at the end of a race, "How'd ya do?" I always answer, "Finished without injury."

You may be in a battle with genes. Look at your family tree to understand if your goals of looking less stretchy are realistic. Keep goals realistic. I'm not willing to try to singlehandedly push a car as is the training fashion these days. You can increase weights, If you can do it without pain or injury. I work with clients as we tweak workouts. The last thing I want to cause is injury.

Finally, a cup of loose green tea after breakfast and lunch can help. Careful though, this can become habit-forming with one-third the caffeine of coffee. Some studies show tea can really flatten the tummy for a lot of folks.

Let me know if I can help more.
