Steelers and brothers too much for Chargers

The Sun sports Game of the Week was a Division II (10-12-year-old) matchup between the Mr. Spiffy Cleaning Chargers vs. the Walter & Associates Steelers in Community Center NFL Flag Football action. Strong Steelers defense and a cohesive offense proved too much for the Chargers.

On the first play from scrimmage, Brooke Capparelli intercepted the pass and ran it back to the two-yard line for the Steelers. Two plays later, Jack Walter handed off to brother Seth Walter, who then rolled out to his right and threw a pass to George Lardas for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was good when quarterback Seth found Jack in the middle of the end zone for the passing score and gave the Steelers the 8-0 lead.

On the next Chargers possession, Moriah Goode picked off a long pass and returned it to the 25-yard line. Three plays later, Seth rolled right again and found his favorite target, Jack, in the end zone for the score. The two-point conversion was good when Lardas took the hand off and ran to the left corner, weaving in and out, for the score and the 16-0 lead.

The Steelers Steel Curtain Defense was too much. On the first play of the next possession, Seth picked off another Charger's pass. Then on second down, Seth took a hand-off from Jack and ran to the right corner for the touchdown. The two-point conversion was good when Seth passed to Jack for the score and made it 24-0.

With two minutes to go in the half, Goode intercepted her second pass and took it all the way back for a Pick-6 touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good and made the score 30-0. Now with only 35 seconds left in the half, the Mr. Spiffy Chargers needed to score. Quarterback Ben Connors threw a nice crossing route to Nico Calleja who caught the pass and ran 35 yards for the Chargers first touchdown. The one-point conversion was no good and the score was 30-6 at the half.

On the first play of the second half, Seth threw a long bomb to Goode for a 60-yard touchdown. The one-point conversion was no good and made the score 36-6. The Chargers team would not give up and, with six minutes left in the game, quarterback Ben Connors threw a long 35-yard, third down, pass to Cooper Hardy, who almost scored and ran it down to the four-yard line. The Steelers D came up big again, and the very next play, Capparelli intercepted her second pass, denying the Chargers a score.

With little time left and trying to just run out the clock, Seth took a hand off and scampered 27 yards for the last Steelers touchdown. The one-point conversion was good on a Seth pass to Lardas. The final score was 43-6 and clearly shows that a strong defense and a little brotherly love on offense can make for a winning combination.
