Rhodes’ continue hot streak in horseshoes
A dozen players occupied a trio of pits at the horseshoe games on Saturday, Sept. 13, and coming out of pool play as the uncontested winner was the undefeated team of Tom Rhodes and George McKay. Three of the remaining five teams held a shoot-out for second place, and, when the clay settled, Debbie Rhodes and Gary Howcroft took their place as runners-up with a 23-16 win over Jay Disbrow and Hank Huyghe.
The dog days of summer nipped the player’s heels the following Wednesday, when the contestants were greeted by higher than normal temps and virtually no breeze. The Rhodes’ continued their winning ways, this time paired as the day’s only 3-0 team. But, undoubtedly, the most exciting match was the one for second place between walker Jay Disbrow, and the team of John Johnson and Steve Grossmann. Disbrow jumped out to a commanding 18-8 lead, only to watch it wilt in the morning heat. Johnson and Grossmann fought back to a 20-20 tie, shutting down Disbrow’s barrage with turns where ringers cancelled ringers and points that needed a caliper to tell who was closest. In the end, Disbrow buckled down, threw a 4-pointer, and ended an exciting game, as the 24-20 come-from-ahead winner.
Play gets underway at 9 am. each Wednesday and Saturday in the park behind Anna Maria’s City Hall at the corner of Gulf Drive and Pine Avenue. Warm-ups begin at 8:45, followed by random team selection just prior to play. Plenty of free parking is available and all skill levels are welcome.
