Rhodes/Doyle Tops at Horseshoes
The day started beautifully, on Saturday, 9/6, with clear skies and unusually low humidity for summer in Florida. As play progressed, it looked like two 3-game winners were headed to the playoffs. But at the last minute, a team with three losses soundly defeated one of contenders and, instead, shifted the playoff to one for second place. Debbie Rhodes and partner, Steve Doyle, cruised to a three game sweep, laying unconstested claim to first place for the day. In the runners-up match, Hank Huyghe and Tom Skoloda jumped out to a quick 14-2 lead over Islanders George McKay and Herb Ditzel. But Ditzel and McKay roared back with sparkling play, enroute to an exciting 23-18 come-from-behind win.
For the first time in over one-hundred consecutive sessions, the games scheduled for the following Wednesday were suspended due to rain.
Players assemble every Wednesday and Saturday, in the little park behind Anna Maria’s City Hall, at the corner of Gulf Drive and Pine Avenue. Warm ups begin at 8:45am. and play starts just after random team selection at 9. Open to the everyone, there’s plenty of parking available and all skill levels are welcome.
