Tampa man wins at ’shoes
On Saturday, July 26, the luck of the draw paired the only Anna Marians who were among the eight in attendance. George McKay and Jerry Bennett shot three ringer-packed games, en route to being the day’s only undefeated team. Second place honors came in similar fashion as Hank Huyghe and Tampa’s Gary Howcroft posted the only 2-1 record during the pool play games. A Tampa firefighter, Howcroft capped another great Island vacation by closing his final game with a six-pack double ringer that secured a come-from-behind win for his team.
The following Wednesday’s pool play results yielded standings that are somewhat unusual for the summertime regulars. Seven players sent six to the playoff round because three out of the four teams finished with 2-1 records (meaning one team got beat up really bad – ouch!). "Walker" Larry Livrago set his eyes on the prize in the semi-final match and pounded his way to a 22-6 win over husband and wife Tom and Debbie Rhodes. He then handed a 23-3 thumping to brothers Jay and Jerry Disbrow.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday in the little park behind Anna Maria’s City Hall building, at the corner of Gulf Drive and Pine Avenue. Warm-ups begin at 8:45 followed by random team selection just prior to play. Plenty of free parking is available and all skill levels are welcome.
