McKay and Pepka win at horseshoes
Seven randomly-paired teams took to the Anna Maria horseshoe pits on Saturday, 5/17. The three-game pool play elimination round format, used by the players, resulted in four of those teams advancing to the morning’s playoff round with 3-0 records. In the semi-final matches, Sam Samuels and Carole Watson defeated Tom Rhodes and Hank Huyghe, 21-8, while George McKay and Ron Pepka squeezed past Debbie Rhodes and Norm Good. McKay and Pepka finished out the day and secured bragging rights with a 21-11 win.
The following Wednesday, five teams competed including a lone player as a walking team. Walker Sam Samuels found himself in the finals against the session’s other undefeated team, John Johnson and Carole Watson. Samuels won the challenge, walking his way to a 21-10 win.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday, in the park behind Anna Maria City Hall building, at the corner of Gulf Drive and Pine Avenue. Warm-ups begin at 8:45, followed by team selection just prior to play. Plenty of free parking is available and all skill levels are welcome.
