Doyle dominates at horseshoes

The Anna Maria horseshoe pits hosted 20 players on Saturday, May 10, and two of the 10 teams present advanced to the morning’s playoff round by virtue of their unbeaten records. In the championship match, Steve Doyle and Jerry Bennett dispensed a 21-5 thrashing to Norm Good and myself to erase any hopes we had of grabbing bragging rights for the day.

The beautiful, crisp morning air on the following Wednesday seemed to make it difficult for many of the players to get out of bed, as was evidenced by a scant player turnout of only 10 horseshoe hopefuls. This time, Doyle was paired with Good and the duo posted the only 3-0 record for the pool play games to emerge as uncontested winners for the session. A playoff was held for second place where Debbie Rhodes and Sam Samuels squeaked out at 23-20 win over Ron Pepka and Debbie’s husband, Tom, with Debbie securing the win for her team with a clutch ringer.

Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday, in the park behind Anna Maria’s City Hall building, at the corner of Gulf Drive and Pine Avenue. Warm-ups begin at 8:45, followed by team selection just prior to play. Plenty of free parking is available and all skill levels are welcome.
