All Rhodes lead to winner’s circle

Sixteen horseshoe players took to the pits on Saturday, May 3, and only the team of Tom Skoloda and Ron Pepka posted perfect pool play records to become the morning’s uncontested champions. Three teams held a playoff round for runners-up honors and, at the end of those matches, it was Norm Good and Jay Disbrow grabbing second place, winning 23-18 over Art Kingstad and Herb Puryear and then 21-19 against Steve Doyle and John Johnson.

The following Wednesday, the eighteen player turnout sent five randomly paired teams to the playoffs in search of bragging rights. In the finale, of the ensuing marathon, the husband-and-wife team of Tom and Debbie Rhodes won their sixth game of the day 21-15 over Milt Bowser and Skip Meeks.

"Debbie carried me this last game," remarked husband Tom. "I ran out of gas and she kicked it up a notch to win it for us."

Play gets underway at 9 am. every Wednesday and Saturday, in the park behind Anna Maria City Hall at the corner of Gulf Drive and Pine Avenue. Warm-ups begin at 8:45, followed by team selection just prior to play. Plenty of free parking is available and all skill levels are welcome.
