Auntie M’s Holmes Beach Laundromat, the only Laundromat in Holmes
Beach or Anna Maria, will close May 30 if a buyer is not found.
If you’ve always wanted to come clean, now’s your chance to do so and become the owner of an Island institution in the process.
Meredith and Gerry Slavin, owners of Auntie M’s Holmes Beach Laundromat, announced Monday that they will be forced to close the business unless they can find a buyer by May 30.
"We’ve been trying to sell it for a year," Meredith explained. "We are retiring and this is one of the businesses that we need to sell. If someone does not come forward, we’ll have to close it by the end of May, so we have a month to liquidate the equipment."
The Laundromat has served visitors and residents for more than 40 years and has a wash and fold department and is used by many who clean condos and rental units. It also has rental income from an office space adjacent to the Laundromat.
"It’s a small town mom-and-pop business, so it doesn’t appeal to some people," Gerry added. "We really want someone to come in and step up and continue it. It’s a hugely important piece of the Island. We have concerns about the future of our Island and the services that are offered."
Meredith said at one time, the Laundromat offered dry cleaning and that aspect of the business could be revived. She said she also has been contacted regarding other income-producing possibilities.
"We would consider financing it," Meredith offered. "That’s how much we don’t want it to close."
‘We are hoping that someone will step forward and we’ll help them get started," Gerry said. ‘It’s a social service issue. If we can help somebody keep it open, we’ll do that."
Interested buyers can contact Meredith at 526-7500.
