Sea Turtles: An Island saga

Anna Maria Island Sun News Story

Even hushed tones carry over the quiet Gulf of Mexico at night, turning the turtle hatching into a silent vigil.

The volunteers who found the nest are there, as are those who have kept watch over it for two months. Nighttime beachwalkers join in to watch and wait for the magical event.

Suddenly, just when the drowsy crowd least expects it, the sand breaks open and a hundred tiny turtles pour out, streaming to the Gulf in a struggle to live.

The night sky defends them from ravenous birds, and the darkened buildings on the beach keep them from racing the wrong way.

It’s sea turtle nesting season from May 1 to Oct. 31 on Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key, where any given evening, you can witness a miracle.
