Dream team wins at horseshoes

Prior to the start of play, on Saturday, March 29, horseshoe regulars John Johnson and Ron Slagh had a most curious conversation. "Last night, I dreamed we were partners today and that we went on to win," confided Johnson. Well, the luck of the draw linked the twosome, from the 29-player pool, and the duo joined two other teams to battle for bragging rights in the morning’s playoff round. In the semifinal match, Slagh and Johnson bested Debbie Rhodes and Bob Lee 21-11 and then went on to hand a 23-13 defeat to Dean Rowe and Marvin Gangemi. "Considering the dream came true, it’s a shame it wasn’t about six winning lottery numbers," joked Johnson. Later that afternoon, more than 30players and their guests enjoyed themselves at the horseshoe player’s annual luncheon hosted by Pelican Pete’s restaurant on Cortez Road and featuring "DJ BillyBob" spinning classic oldies for their listening and dancing enjoyment.

The following Wednesday, the 27 players present sent only two teams to vie for the title of Champs for the Day. Celebrating his 67th birthday, Rod Bussey and partner Gene Bobeldyk fought a seesaw battle to earn a 21-19 win over Slagh and RB Munro, with Bussey throwing a game-winning ringer to end the match.

Play gets underway at 9 am. every Wednesday and Saturday, in the park behind Anna Maria’s City Hall at the corner of Gulf Drive and Pine Avenue. Warm-ups begin at 8:45, followed by random team selection just prior to play. Plenty of free parking is available and all skill levels are welcome.
