Pekpa returns to winner’s circle

Sixteen teams took to the clay at the Anna Maria horseshoe pits on Saturday, March 22, but only two of them emerged unscathed from the morning’s pool play elimination matches. In the day’s final game, Ron Pepka and Dave Long narrowly won bragging rights with their 21-19 win over Debbie Rhodes and Greg Schutt. Trailing 18-8, Rhodes and Schutt ran off eleven unanswered points to take their first lead of the game, only to watch as Pepka threw a game-deciding ringer to win it for his team. "Whew, when they took the lead, I thought they were gonna win it," said Pepka with sigh of relief. "They were really on a roll."

The following Wednesday, it was 30 players that sent three undefeated teams to the final round. Winning two lopsided contests, Gene Bobeldyk and Dean Rowe delivered a 22-2 thumping to Adin Shank and partner Art Kingstad, and then handed out a 22-4 thrashing to Bob Lee and new-comer, Marvin Gangemi. During the congratulatory handshake, Lee joked, "Is that any way to treat a new guy?"

Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Each Wednesday and Saturday, in the park behind Anna Maria City Hall at the corner of Gulf Drive and Pine Avenue. Warm-ups begin at 8:45, followed by random team selection just prior to play. Plenty of free parking is available and all skill levels are welcome.
