Florida has been the mecca for retirees for several generations, and with the baby boomers just starting to make their retirement plans, our state will undoubtedly continue to be one of their top choices. With an aging population, the need for health care and living assistance inevitably follows. My Care Home Health, Inc. on Cortez Road in Bradenton is responding to that need and offering a variety of services for seniors.

Steven Ortiz, the director of operations, says the goal of My Care Home Health is to provide in-home health care and personal assistance ultimately allowing individuals to maintain their independence. Living in familiar surroundings with even moderate assistance is not only more comfortable for their clients, but also promotes a healthy and self-sufficient lifestyle choice.

The nine-month old company provides placement of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants and home health aides. RNs and LPNs are of, course ,licensed by the state of Florida and certified nursing assistants are certified by the state. Home health aides are interviewed and tested by My Care Home Health prior to assignment with a state approved examination. Also, it does level 1 security and background checks with fingerprinting, which are paid by potential employees in an effort to maintain a high standard of staffing.

In addition, Sheila Hatt, director of nursing for the company, not only hires all staff, but personally accompanies them on the first day in the client’s home. She evaluates the assistant’s interaction between the client and his/her family and will do a follow-up as needed by both phone and personal visits, as well as staying in touch with family members who reside out of state.

Hatt also interviews clients before making an assignment. She recommends the level of service necessary and the number of hours she feels is sufficient to fulfill the client’s requirements. The days and hours of service are flexible and tailored to the client’s needs, generally with a four-hour minimum. All the paperwork and billing is organized and coordinated with Business Manager Kim Sandstrom’s help.

Services provided by My Care Home Health are varied and range from skilled nursing to in home companionship. RNs and LPNs are provided to administer IVs, providewound care, dispense medications and educate clients on disease management. Nursing assistants and home health aides can help with bathing, dressing, meal preparation, light housekeeping and communication with professional medical providers. They can also run errands, do grocery shopping and laundry and provide companionship and recreational activities.

My Care Home Health currently covers all of Manatee County, working with private pay clients, clients with long term care insurance and in the near future, Medicaid recipients. Its long term goal is to make in-house training of staff available in order to expand its client base and offer more locations.

According to Steve Ortiz, home based health care services are the wave of the future. They provide the best possible care for the elderly, keep them comfortable in their homes while maintaining their independence and are financially advantageous.
