Two wins in a Rowe

The pool play elimination matches at horseshoes on Saturday, Feb. 23, resulted in four of the 16 teams present getting berths in the morning’s playoff games for winner’s bragging rights.  In the semi-final round, Ron Slagh and John Johnson posted a 21-12 victory against Bob Lee and Gary Pearson, while on the adjacent pits, Rod Bussey and Dean Rowe were on their way to a 21-19 come-from-behind win over Bob Mason and John Crawford.  In the end, Rowe and Bussey grabbed all the glory, cruising 23-15 in their fifth win of the day.

The following Wednesday, 26 players braved a cold north wind, and once again, Rowe showed his horseshoe prowess, pairing with Debbie Rhodes as uncontested winners by being the competition’s only undefeated team.  Seven of the remaining teams entered the fray for second place and, at the end of a marathon playoff, it was Jay Disbrow and Bob Lee who took home the runner’s-up honors.

The games get underway at 9 a.m. each Wednesday and Saturday in the tiny park at the corner of Gulf Drive and Pine Avenue in Anna Maria.  Warm-ups begin at 8:45, followed by random team selection just prior to play.  Plenty of free parking is available and all skill levels are welcome.
