Not that many years ago, the Cortez peninsula across Cortez Road from the historic Cortez fishing village, was not much more than a marina and a few canals to accommodate some of the fishing fleet and pleasure boats. There were a few modest homes, but it wasn’t until the late 1980s that waterfront condominiums started popping up to take advantage of the spectacular bay and island views.

The Pointe At Mariner’s Cove, built in 1988, features beautifully-designed townhouses situated on the point off of 129th Street on Marina Court in a gated community. There are 24 units arranged in six buildings, with four units to a building, two up and two down. All but one building front the bay and some have both bay and boat basin views.

The townhouses feel more like a single- family home than a condominium with about 2,800 square feet. There are three bedrooms and two baths, although some units have additional powder rooms, large center island kitchens with a separate breakfast area, living room with fireplace and formal dining room. All residences are corner units affording a wrap around lanai, which can be glass-enclosed or screened or a combination of both. There is also an additional lanai off the breakfast room.

The units offer private elevators opening into the main living area, two car garages and a bonus room behind the garage. There is a pool and spa and every townhouse comes with a private boat slip of varying sizes in the convenient Cove Sound Boat Basin.

Mariner’s Pointe has not escaped the affects of the recent real estate downturn. The last sale in the complex was in January of 2006 closing at $1,200,000 and the sale prior to this was in March of 2005 for $782,600. As of this writing, there were two units listed for sale, one for $1,095,000 and one for $895,000.

Cortez has changed a lot in the past 20 years, not surprisingly since there are some of the best water views in all of Florida’s west coast within its boundaries. The Point At Mariner’s Cove is a perfect composite of a waterfront community providing single family amenities and boating access – coastal living at its best.
