BRADENTON BEACH – Shortly after city commission gave its approval, Jeanne and Spiros Kambitsis began putting in a door on the west end of their restaurant, The Gathering Place at 101 7th St. N., and erecting a fence west of the building for outdoor dining.

They have finished the fencing and have tables and chairs out for diners who want to listen to the surf across the street. They also put out two benches west of the fence to make it feel friendly and welcoming, according to Jeanne.

"We wanted to improve the looks of the place from the street," she said. "We are beautifying our restaurant for the good of the community."

They still have plans to add more landscaping, such as palm trees, and some other amenities, but diners are already taking advantage of the bistro feel of outdoor dining while enjoying a home cooked meal at a reasonable price.

While going through the process of getting permission from the city to put up this outdoor area and move some of their inside seating outside, it was apparent that they have made a number of friends during their first year of business. Several people, many of them residents of nearby condominiums, came to city hall to testify in favor of the expansion, saying they love the food and the eatery is a benefit to the neighborhood and the city.

They are open from around 7 or 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and beginning Nov. 19, they will be open Mondays for breakfast and lunch.

For more information, call The Gathering Place at 779-0313.
