August is hot. Jazz is cool.
Put them together and you’ve got the first annual Jazz on the Islands, a month-long music event that promises to bring sax, swing and smooth jazz to Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key and other Manatee County venues.
Performers include John Rinell, Chuck Caudill and Jazz Mo at the BeachHouse restaurant in Bradenton Beach and the Ron Barber Trio, Project SRQ and John Young Trio at Da Giorgio Ristorante, the Herb Harris Jazz Trio at Ooh La La Bistro and Skip Cook at the Beach Bistro, all in Holmes Beach.
Other local artists include KoKo Ray, John Dewey, the Diane Linscott Trio and Tom Barrett's Sophisticated Jazz at Island venues including Banana Cabana, the Sun House and Jessica's Beach Lounge in Bradenton Beach, the Sandbar in Anna Maria and Euphemia Haye on Longboat Key.
Even getting from one place to another will be jazzy, with free Island trolleys featuring musicians Bob Moffitt, Marc Mannino and T.K. Mizunuma.
Jazz also will be featured on the mainland at the East Village Cabaret, Mattison's Riverside at Twin Dolphin Marina and Zio’s Old World Italian in Bradenton, Fred's and Mainstreet in Lakewood Ranch and the Prime Outlets in Ellenton.
A ticketed performance is scheduled Aug. 10 at the Crosley Estate by German jazz guitarist Nils with the Michael Royal Quartet and Orquesta Infinidad.
Throughout the month, Leslie Nachmann, of JazzRadio Berlin, will host her live daily “White Room” broadcast from the Hilton Longboat Key Beach Resort.
The radio station, on the Internet at www.jazzradio.net, is in partnership with the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau on the new tourism promotion, aimed at attracting primarily German visitors to the Islands during a traditionally slow season.
