Vol 6 No. 46 - August 9, 2006

Skim Bash 2006 should be awesome!
Some of the best skim boarders from throughout the state of Florida are expected to converge on Anna Maria Island on Saturday, Aug. 26, for the West Coast Surf Shop/BeachHouse Skimboard Bash 2006.

The annual event, which is held at the BeachHouse restaurant in Bradenton Beach, last year drew more than 500 spectators and 100 participants and proved to be one of the finest skim board contests the Island has ever seen.

This year’s tournament is expected to equal or surpass that. Organizers have put together an impressive array of sponsors, trophies and prizes, all of which will be handed out to the top finishers in each of nine divisions. Every contestant will receive a competition T-shirt, goodie bag, lunch and one raffle ticket. The top three will receive trophies and prizes will go to the top four.

Once again, The Sun newspaper is one of the event’s sponsors and will provide the trophies as well as complete coverage.

ZAP Pro Skim Boarders will stage demonstrations and, if last year was any indication, should put on an incredible show.

The following are the nine categories: Minis, 8 and under; Menehunes, 9-11; Boys, 12-14; Jr. Men’s, 15-17; Men’s, 18-21; Sr. Men’s, 22 & up; Girls, 14 & under; Women, 15 & up; Professional.

Check in time the day of the contest is 7:30 a.m. next to the BeachHouse. The contest begins at 8:30 a.m.

Registration for the contest continues at West Coast Surf Shop, 3902 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach. The fee is $30 for amateurs and $60 for professionals and is due by Aug. 22. Late registration will cost each entrant an extra $10. However, the number of entrants will be capped and organizers are urging everyone to pre-register to ensure a spot in the appropriate division. Registration forms can be obtained from West Coast Surf Shop. For more information, call West Coast at 778-1001.
