ANNA MARIA They came from Cortez to Cape Cod and everywhere
in between to enjoy the beautiful day and celebrate the Islands
history at Island Heritage Day held Saturday on Pine Avenue
in Anna Maria.
"It was a wonderful turnout and everybody was in good
spirits," Carolyne Norwood, executive director of the
Anna Maria Island Historical Society, said. "The parades
were fantastic. The general store was big hit."
Many people remarked how they loved the refreshing, hometown
atmosphere of the event with its bike and pet parades, vendors
with affordable prices and exceptional music.
Hundreds of people came to see the restored Belle Haven General
Store, which had its grand opening at 10 a.m. with a ribbon
cutting.
One of the days highlights was the pet parade with dogs
of every size and breed, bunny rabbits and turtles, most dressed
in costumes. One crowd favorite of the 55 entries was Elvis
the Energizer Pug, owned by Paula Crider, of Bradenton. Elvis
won the best costume award, paws down. Prizes for the contest
were furnished by the Paw Spa in Holmes Beach.
The decorated bicycle parade had 40 entrants from youths to
seniors. Prizes were furnished by Mama Lo by the Sea.
