Jane E.'s bakery is finally open, and what a bakery it
is. You can get fresh-out-of-the-oven scones to go with
your freshly ground coffee in the morning. Or for afternoon
tea, try some of their custom made biscotti with just a
hint of citrus.
Barb McNelis, a retired clinical psychologist, is doing
all the bread baking.
"It was always my dream to bake bread, so after I retired,
I went to the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan. I
took courses in Italy and in Paris," McNelis said as
she kneaded the day's supply of boules round, rustic
French loaves with a hard, chewy crust and some real substance.
"I love making the artesian breads," she added.
You can sample those boules any day but Monday at Ginny's
and Jane E.'s at the Old IGA in Anna Maria.
Try the sourdough, the organic wheat, the rye or the regular.
You can't go wrong.
There are also baguettes, hand-formed bagels, several kinds
of foccacias and different quiches each day.
They also offer fresh muffins, cookies, cakes, brownies
and berry pies. Or try the crostadas, which are free-formed
individual tarts filled with peaches, strawberries or mixed
fruit.
To go with your baked goodies, you can have a cappuccino,
a latte, a macchiatto or a great cup of coffee or tea
regular or decaf.
Other offerings are chai, herb teas, smoothies and organic
juices.
"It is a dream come true," said Jane E. "It
finally all came together here in this place, and I'm just
so happy."
Jane E.'s bakery is also a dream come true for a lot of
Island residents who don't want to go a long distance to
get fabulous baked goods.
You'll find Jane E.'s in Ginny's and Jane E.'s at the Old
IGA at the corner or Gulf Drive and Magnolia Avenue in Anna
Maria.
They're open from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. or so Tuesday through
Saturday. Sunday hours are from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.-ish.
Call a couple of days in advance for special orders.
