Bolger, Bell new flotilla chiefs

By Cindy Lane

Cortez resident John D. Bolger and Holmes Beach resident Steven C. Bell took the oath of office on Saturday as Commander and Vice Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary District 7, Division 8 Flotilla 81.

The two took office at a Change of Watch ceremony and luncheon at the Bradenton Yacht Club in Palmetto, and were recognized by about 50 of their fellow officers and staff, as was outgoing Commander T. Allen Jones.

The mission of the auxiliary is to find easy solutions to difficult problems, said Bolger, who recounted a legend about explorer Christopher Columbus solving the riddle of how to stand an egg on its end by thinking outside the box and smashing the end of the egg.

"Sometimes our job is to teach the public to make the egg stand on end," said Bolger, who also was recognized on Saturday for completing training in electronic presentation and web-based technologies.

Bell asked auxiliary members to help recruit new people into the volunteer group, which assists U.S. Coast Guard Station Cortez in its homeland security mission. Auxiliaries have lost membership since the U.S. Department of Homeland Security began requiring security checks on members.

The following flotilla staff officers also were sworn in: Sam Malfese, Jean Dawson, Samuel Adams, Robert Bartelt, Lillian Revor, Paul Georges, John Durfee, Edward Niespodziany, Robert Fesko, Jeffrey Smith, Frank Milio, Barbara Bickley, Raymond Votava, Shirley Pelcher, Joan Morello and Mary Arpino.
