Pledging to love and honor each other from this day forward, John and Laurie Adams renewed their wedding vows a day before their 50th anniversary.

Surrounded by children, grandchildren, family and friends, the couple celebrated on the beach off Magnolia Avenue — the site of two previous 50th wedding anniversary celebrations in the Adams family. John's mother and father, Sam and Alice Adams, and Alice's sister, Bernice, and her husband, Ward Cole, also celebrated in the same spot.

The Adams have lived all over the world and are now retired and living in Holmes Beach.
Daughter Cay Maria, who lives in New York, made a saffron wedding canopy, a reflection of the recent event in Central Park.

John and Laurie met on the Island while they were in high school.

"We both always vacationed here," said John. "I graduated and we waited a year until Laurie graduated. Then we married."

Father Frank McGrath officiated at the renewal of vows and the Adams' children shared memories of their parents' lives.

"These two people are an example of what commitment means," said Judy Adams, sister-in-law. "Their word is their bond. We could all learn from them."

As the ceremony concluded, John sang a song to his bride about how he'd always dreamed she'd be by his side.
