The youth soccer season heats up at the Anna Maria Island Community Center. Now with 44 games under way, the competition gets tighter. Mr. Bones and Longboat Observer are now tied for first place in Division I. LaPensee Plumbing slips into a three-way tie for second with West Coast Air Conditioning and ReMax Gulfstream Realty. Island Real Estate continues its fifth week at first place in Division II with Harry’s in second place and Pine Avenue in third place. Air and Energy solidifies its stay in first place after two more wins this past week. Danziger Allergy and Sinus is in second place, and Cannon’s slips into third.

Longboat Observer is now tied for first place with Mr. Bones after a highly competitive game against last week’s first place team, LaPensee Plumbing. The first goal of the night came from LaPensee’s Joey Hutchinson. Hutchinson moved quickly down the left wing and chipped the ball in far post. Seconds later Longboat’s Billy Alstrom retaliated with a goal from the kickoff, bringing the score up to a 1-1 tie. LaPensee’s goalie, Sylvie Mariolan, used whatever means necessary to deflect the ball. If she couldn’t get her hands on the ball, she would give it a strong boot out. Hutchinson scored by following up his first shot and got it in on the rebound. Longboat matched LaPensee’s second goal when Alstrom gained control. Alstrom trapped the ball at half field and scored on a low shot that went in the lower left corner. Then LaPensee’s Heldino Gomez took the ball from Longboat’s defense and scored on a crisp shot far post. Hutchinson added another goal by making a skilled move around the defense and releasing a shot into the upper right-hand corner.

The second half began with a 4-2 LaPensee lead, but not for long. Celia Ware, eager to reduce the two goal gap, scored on a crisp air ball into the upper left corner. Both teams were tied again when Alison Lukitsch made a great pass to Alstrom, whose shot bounced in near post. Longboat’s Forrest Schield made several impressive saves. He was not afraid to slide on the ground to keep the ball out of his domain. Alstrom scored off a corner kick giving Longboat a one point lead. Soon after, Hutchinson faked out two defenders and scored far post. Ware used some skilled moves to bring the ball up and scored upper post to bring the score to 6-6. With only a few minutes to go, Ware scored the final goal of the evening giving Longboat the 7-6 win over LaPensee in this intense game.
